Marrakech is a city of contrasts behind the wheel. The main avenues are wide and well-marked. The medina is a different world. This guide tells you what you actually need to know before hitting the road.
Required documents
Valid driving licence. Passport or national ID. The registration document and insurance are given to you with the car. French, Belgian, and Swiss citizens: your national licence is fine. No international driving permit needed for Morocco if your country is on the convention list.
Driving in the medina
Our most honest advice: don't. The medina is built for feet and carts. One-way streets that change by the hour, passages under 1.8 metres wide, and parking a car there is a discipline in itself. Park at Parking Kssour or Parking Bab Doukkala and walk in. You'll thank yourself.
Marrakech outside the medina
The Guéliz district, the Palmeraie, the Ourika road, the Fès road. These are wide, well-maintained, and predictable. Rush hour (8-9am and 5-6pm) is busy but moving. Watch out for scooters appearing from everywhere.
Day trips from Marrakech
The car is perfect for day trips. Essaouira is two and a half hours via the motorway and national road. Ouarzazate is four hours over the Tichka pass. Aït Benhaddou five hours. Lalla Takerkoust lake one hour. Plan early mornings in summer to avoid afternoon heat.
Fuel and petrol stations
We return the car to you with a full tank. We ask you to return it full too. Total, Afriquia, and Winxo stations are everywhere in Marrakech and on all national roads.
What to bring
Your WhatsApp for any questions. Water in the car in summer. A good playlist. The rest is our problem.
