Road trip Morocco with the family: which car should you choose?

Morocco is built for road trips. Roads are good on the main routes, landscapes change every two hours, and distances between cities are manageable. With kids, car choice becomes more serious.

How much luggage for how many people?

That's the first question. Four people with medium suitcases need at least 200 litres of boot space. Four people with full equipment (pushchair, car seat, big bags) need an SUV. No compromise on this.

The Hyundai Tucson: our family recommendation

High driving position, 513-litre boot, five real seats with genuine legroom in the back. The Tichka mountain pass with kids is an adventure. The Tucson makes it comfortable. Auto aircon that actually holds temperature, windows that go all the way down. For long stages, this is the car we recommend.

The VW T-Roc: the more dynamic alternative

Slightly less spacious than the Tucson but more enjoyable to drive. If your kids are older and you have a reasonable amount of luggage, the T-Roc is excellent for those who want driving enjoyment too.

Essential stops on a family road trip in Morocco

Marrakech as your base. Ouarzazate and its film studios. Aït Benhaddou, the UNESCO-listed ksar. The Road of a Thousand Kasbahs. Merzouga and the Erg Chebbi dunes if you have time. Return via Fès and Meknès. Allow two weeks to do it properly.

Practical tips

Mountain roads in the High Atlas are narrow and winding. Take your time. Kids love the desert bivouac night but book the night before. Petrol is available everywhere except really remote areas. Fill up before taking any piste.
