Marrakech is two cities in one. There's the medina everyone comes to see — the souks, the Koutoubia, Jemaa el-Fna — and there's everything else. Everything else is what you miss without a car.
The medina: enter on foot, sleep outside the walls
The medina deserves to be explored on foot. Leave the car at Parking Kssour or Bab Doukkala and walk into the souks without a map. Get lost in the dyers' quarter, find a riad for lunch, exit through a different gate. It's a labyrinth city and that's intentional. But for sleeping, the best riads are in the new city or on the Ourika road. The car gets you there in ten minutes.
The Palmeraie and the Fès road
Twenty minutes from the centre, the Palmeraie is a different Marrakech. Villas hidden among palm groves, pools, golf courses. The Fès road passes through luxury residential areas then Berber villages within an hour. The contrast is striking and can't be done by taxi.
The Ourika valley
One hour south of Marrakech, the Ourika road climbs toward the High Atlas along a permanent river. Berber villages clinging to the mountainside, waterfalls, Sunday markets. In summer, Marrakchis come here to escape the heat. By car, you can leave at dawn, reach the waterfalls by 9am, and be back in the city for lunch.
Lalla Takerkoust Lake
One hour west, this artificial lake with turquoise water is one of the region's least-kept secrets. Paddleboats, kayaks, terraces over the water. Perfect for a half-day. The road passes through villages that appear on no tourist circuit.
Essaouira: the Atlantic pause
Two and a half hours west, the blue and white city on the Atlantic coast is the perfect counterpoint to Marrakech. Sea air, UNESCO-listed medina, fishing port, permanent wind that feels like a reset. Leave early, arrive for lunch, drive back in the evening. It's the most popular day trip from Marrakech. And it can only be done by car.
